Justice Campbell’s decision sets aside the Election Code adopted by referendum held in February of 2005 for technical matters relating to the final copy of the Election Code that was distributed prior to the 2005 Referendum. As a result, Justice Campbell ruled that the version of the Election Code used to administer the last full election of Chief and Council as well as the by-election in the spring of 2005 may not have the proper support of the Community and may not have full authority to be used to govern the electoral process for the Fort McKay First Nation. Under the terms of the decision, day to day operations of the Fort McKay First Nation will not be substantially affected. Phil Peddie, Band Administrator has already met with a number of Elders to explain the events and further meetings will be held to explain the process that will be undertaken to deal with these matters. The Fort McKay First Nation has launched a court process to address these matters and more details will be announced as they become available. First and foremost, Chief and Council are working to ensure that the day to day needs of the community are served and that these contentious issues, which have plagued the community for many years, are dealt with in a manner that restores the strength of the governance process. There will be announcements of meetings to discuss these matters in the near future. Please come to these meetings to understand, more fully the process and provide your input into a solution.
