"The Government is committed to bring a fair and lasting resolution to this chapter of our history and move forward. The discussions led by the Honourable Frank Iacobucci have resulted in a Settlement Agreement to foster reconciliation and healing among all Canadians," said Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women and Minister responsible for Indian Residential Schools Resolution Canada. Individuals who have already settled their claims through litigation, the ADR process, or the ADR pilot projects can still apply for the Common Experience Payment. Following verification, each former student who applies for this settlement will be given $10,000 for the first year or part of residence in addition another $3,000 for each following year of residence. "We hope that (the) announcement will bring closure to former students and their descendents. The settlement is just and honourable, as will be our ongoing partnership with Aboriginal people," said Jim Prentice, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians. At this point, an Advance Payment Program is available for all of those 65 years of age or older. Applicants will receive an advance payment of $8,000 which would be subtracted from any future Common Experience Payment or other imbursement connected to their experience at Indian Residential Schools. No lawyers are needed for this application process. The instructions are clearly placed in front of all application forms and the forms are only 3 pages long and simple to fill. No school records are needed for this application; the only document required is a proof of age certificate along with an authorized signature to confirm your document. Applications must be sent no later than December 31, 2006. Keep in mind that at this point, only those who turned 65 years of age prior to May 30, 2005 are eligible for the Advance Payment Program. Further notice will be given once Common Experience Payment applications are available. Applications are now available at the administration office in the Dorothy McDonald Centre. Applications are also available on the AFN website at: www.afn.ca/residentialschools.
