Shell Canada Limited (Shell) and Fort McKay First Nation entered into a preliminary agreement on June 21, 2005 for Shell to develop Fort McKay First Nation's oil sands reserves located at Fort McKay, Alberta near Syncrude Canada Limited's and Shell's crown leases. Shell and Fort McKay First Nation, by mutual agreement, have ceased exclusive negotiations with regard to developing the Fort McKay deposits.
"Chief Jim Boucher of the Fort McKay First Nation added: While we continue to enjoy a strong, positive working relationship with Shell in other ventures; we could not build a feasible business case for timely development of these lands. We are now exploring other strategic development options."
