Our Mission
“Our programs help children and youth become caring, self-directed individuals
responsible to themselves, their family and their community. Our programs
promote skill building, self-reliance and personal development, cultural education
and activities, recreation, environmental and community awareness.
The Fort McKay Wellness Center serves all youth, ages six-to-18 years, who
reflect the rich diversity of our community.”
It is our goal to offer a safe and nurturing environment in which all children and youth have each and every opportunity to reach their full potential. All programs include the seven teachings:

Our Goals
- Foster the self-worth of each child and develop the children’s self-care skills.
- Develop their personal and interpersonal social skills and promote respect for cultural diversity.
- For adolescents, foster an appropriate sense of independence based on their level
of maturity and develop their refusal skills.
- Teach basic life skills such as meal preparation when cooking alone, awareness of emergency numbers and home safety guidelines.
- Provide assistance with homework, tutoring services and other learning activities.
- Provide new, developmentally appropriate enrichment activities to add to students’
learning at school.
- Help them develop thinking and problem solving skills and spark their curiosity and
love of learning.
- Provide recreational, leisure and physical activities to develop physical skills and constructively channel their energy.
- Encourage participation in individual and/or team sport activities to help youth
develop self esteem by striving for a personal best.
- Encourage participation in group activities to assist youth development in team
building, cooperation and conflict resolution.
- Provide cultural programs in partnership with community Elders to keep the cultures
and traditions alive and promote a sense of pride in themselves and their community.
- Provide appropriate job readiness training, including information about career
preparation and training opportunities preferably through first hand experiences
with community business leaders.

Current Programs & Services
Children’s After School Program - For children six to eleven years of age between the hours of 3:15 pm to 5:00 pm. Gym activities are held between 3:15 pm and 4:30 pm in the school. Defined, structured programming such as recreational games, gym activities, athletic development, homework assistance, board games, arts and crafts, baking classes, etc. are held until 5:00 pm each day.
Supper Program - This program is open to all children and youth in the community. The supper program runs Monday through Friday from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The supper program promotes participation in the preparation of the meal, as well as teaches components such
as safety rules of the kitchen, proper food handling procedures and cooking healthy meals. This program enhances team building, communication and social skills in addition to providing proper nourishment.
Drop In Supervised Youth Nights - For youth 12 to 18 years of age between the hours
of 6:00 pm and 9:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Defined, structured programming such
as recreational games, gym activities, athletic development, board games, arts and crafts, baking, personal management development, role modeling, etc. takes place during this time.
Youth Leadership Program - This program, sponsored by Albian Sands Energy Inc, operates one night per week. It provides recreational and leisure opportunities that support the development of leadership skills for all in school youth between the ages of 12 and 18 years.
Cultural Programs - These programs include the involvement of community members and Elders to teach the children and youth of their community and pass on the cultures, heritage and traditions.
Summer Day Camp Programs - For a period of eight weeks during the months of July and August, Monday to Friday from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm daily. This camp offers a variety of programming for children, ages six to thirteen years. Each day starts with the preparation and serving of a healthy breakfast for everyone. Some of the daily activities include gym activities, outdoor adventure activities, baking, arts and crafts, field trips, swimming, bowling, water parks, aquatic games, science activities, karaoke, etc. The summer wraps up with an outdoor camping excursion.
YMCA Pre Teen and Teen Nights - These programs, sponsored by Albian Sands Energy Inc, provides the opportunity for teens, ages 12 to 18 years, attend a Teen Night at the YMCA one Friday per month and youth, ages 7 to 11 years, the opportunity to attend Pre Teen Nights at the YMCA twice per month. This program allows the children and youth to integrate with their peers in Fort McMurray for an evening filled with recreational and leisure activities. Swimming is the most popular activity enjoyed.
Tutoring Program - Offered every Monday and Thursday evening between the hours of 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm for all school age children and youth. This program has been sponsored by the Community Enhancement Society.

Fort McKay Wellness Center Supper Program
The Fort McKay Wellness Center Supper Program is open to all children and youth in
the community. This program runs Monday through Friday from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
The supper program promotes participation in the preparation of the well, as well as teaches components such as safety rules of the
kitchen, proper food handling procedures and cooking healthy meals. The program follows the Canada Food Guide for menu planning and preparation of all meals. Some of the program goals include:
- To provide healthy, nutritious meals to children and youth
- To provide instruction on healthy eating and healthy living
- To provide instruction by dental hygienists on proper dental care
- To provide instruction on safe food handling preparation and cooking
- To provide instruction on safety in the kitchen
- To provide instruction on personal hygiene
- To enhance social interaction and basic coping skills
- Developing co-operation and enhance team building skills
This program has grown immensely and fulfils a huge need in the community, not only
for those families in crisis but for a number of children who benefit when parents and/or extended families members are unable to provide hot, nutritional meals due to shift work schedules, illness, etc.
