Parks and Recreation

Fort McKay boasts numerous recreation facilities, including playgrounds and parks, two baseball diamonds and an outdoor hockey rink. In addition, the community will also have a new arena offering a range of recreational opportunities, including an NHL ice surface rink, for the entire community.

The Fort McKay Parks and Recreational Society oversees and manages recreational programs, playgrounds and other recreational facilities in Fort McKay. Activities offered by the Parks and Recreational Society include the Fort McKay Fitness Centre, sports teams and athletes, physical education programs, special events and the North Wind Dancers.

The Parks and Recreation Society initiates, and manages comprehensive cultural retention programs, recreation programs as well as manages parks, playgrounds and other recreational facilities in Fort McKay. This includes:

  • The Fort McKay Fitness Center
  • Fort McKay Playgrounds and Parks
  • Fort McKay sport teams /athletes
  • Fort McKay physical education programs
  • Special events in Fort McKay
  • The Fort McKay Dancers & Drummers

The specific Parks and Recreation Programs envisioned by the Fort McKay Parks and Recreation Society are multifaceted and innovative.

Fort McKay Fitness Center

The Fort McKay Parks and Recreation Society created, and manages, the new state-of-the-art Fort McKay Fitness Center.

Current Programs:

  • Boxing classes
  • Boot Camp fitness class
  • Jump & Strength classes

Location: Basement of the Dorothy McDonald Business Center (entrance is on southeast side of building).

Fees: Monthly fees are only $20.

Hours of Operation: Monday through Thursday (11:00 am to 9 p.m.)
Saturday and Sunday (2:00 pm to 9:00 p.m.)

Fort McKay Playgrounds and Parks

The Fort McKay Parks and Recreation society is negotiating with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo regarding two new playgrounds (one for children aged 1 to 5 years, and one for children aged 6 to 12).

The society is also now working with industry to build a skateboard park in Fort McKay.

  • Fort McKay softball and golf teams

Physical Education Programs

The Fort McKay Parks and Recreation Society also provides the Physical Education requirements to the students of the Fort McKay E-Learning Program through the volleyball program and the fitness center. This allows for a complete high school curriculum allowing students to graduate high school right here in Fort McKay.

Special Events

Special events organized by the society include the Firemen's Christmas Ball and the Fort McKay Winter Family Festival. The society also plays a major role in Treaty Days.
