For the first time, this year’s Treaty Days kicked off the celebration with a Golf Tournament. Held at the Miskanaw Golf Course, the tournament started bright and early at 7am, Thursday morning. Despite the rain and cold weather, everyone had a blast on the green. Thanks to all of the generous sponsors, an outstanding amount of $150,000 was raised in total for Fort McKay’s Post Secondary and Community Education Programs. The next morning, many people were woken by the echo of Fort McKay’s Drummers coming through the parade at 11 am. Leading the floats in their sharp uniforms, 5 Royal Canadian Mounted Police marched their way around the community. Over 20 floats took part of this year’s parade! The parade was followed by an opening celebration. Dignitaries included: National Chief Phil Fontaine, Mayor Melissa Blake, and MLA Guy Boutilier. During his speech, Chief Fontaine expressed his thoughts of Fort McKay: “This First Nation is a leader in the country.” Some of the best highlights of the weekend include: canoe races, hand games, jigging, fiddling, moose calling and goose calling contests, baseball tournament… too many to name all of them. The Arbour was filled with dancing crowds all night long who listened to the music played by Stephanie Harpe, Nicely Put Together and Trooper. For many years now, Treaty Days has created a sense of pride for Fort McKay members. Treaty Days provides everyone with the opportunity to celebrate Aboriginal culture together with surrounding neighbours. We would like to thank all of the judges who contributed their time during competitions and all of the sponsors who made this event as successful as it was… It is also important to acknowledge all of the hard work that came from all of our many volunteers. These individuals went out of their way to make Treaty Days as memorable as it was. What an amazing turnout! For more information, please contact: Nancy Doire
