The Infrastructure Department oversees new construction projects within the community.

Infrastructure

Fort McKay First Nation (FMFN) infrastructure team is dedicated to improving housing, infrastructure, maintenance and Elders’ services in our community.

We continue to successfully complete several important projects by continuing to work hard and make substantial investments in our housing, roads, public buildings, facilities, and utilities, to ensure that our members have the essential homes and programs and services they need to thrive.

FMFN Infrastructure manages the FMFN facilities, buildings, housing, roads, sidewalks, landscaping, fleet maintenance. and equipment maintenance. FMFN Infrastructure is divided into two main areas: Housing and Public Works.

Public Works Department

FMFN Public Works (PW) Department is basically the behind-the-scenes team that keeps FMFN running smoothly and safely.
The PW Department works in the following areas to raise the quality of life in FMFN:

1. Infrastructure Maintenance, & Repair

  • Roads & sidewalks – repairing potholes, repaving streets, fixing cracks, clearing snow/ice.
  • Public buildings and facilities public structures – inspections, structural repairs, painting, and safety upkeep.

2. Water & Sewer Services

  • Maintaining drinking water systems, pumping stations, and water mains.
  • Running or overseeing wastewater treatment plants.
  • Clearing blockages in sewer lines and preventing overflows.

3. Public Spaces & Parks

  • Landscaping, tree trimming, and maintaining public green spaces.
  • Upkeep of playground equipment, park benches, and public restrooms.

4. Waste Management

  • Street sweeping and litter removal.

5. Stormwater Management

  • Designing and maintaining drainage systems.

6. Emergency Response Support

  • Providing sandbags or flood barriers.
  • Repairing damaged infrastructure quickly after emergencies.

7. Capital Projects

  • Overseeing construction contractors and ensuring code compliance.

8. Elder Residential Support, Housing Department Support and Special Event Support.

In short, Public Works are the folks who make sure your community’s physical systems work every day—water flows, trash is collected, streets are safe, and public buildings, facilities and spaces are usable. If Public Works stopped working for even a week, you’d notice very quickly.

Essentially, they keep the physical backbone of the community working day-to-day and prepare it for long-term growth. Without the Public Works team, the community’s water, roads, and public spaces would quickly fall into disrepair.
